Introduction:
Cleaning your watch—it’s a small task, but it’s often neglected or not done properly. Dirt, sweat, dead skin cells, oils, and more love to cling to your precious watch. That’s why it’s important to clean your watch regularly. Not only does this ensure your watch always looks fresh and shiny, but it’s also much more hygienic. In this blog post, we’ll provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide on how to best clean and care for your watch.
Step 1: Check
Before you start cleaning, make sure to check whether your watch is water-resistant. Always ensure that the crown is securely tightened. Cleaning is done at your own risk, so be sure to check these things carefully!
Step 2: Use a special mild cleaner, not soap!
When cleaning watches, it’s recommended to use mild cleaning agents. Watches made of precious metals particularly benefit from non-abrasive and non-corrosive products. Soap is not recommended because it is often harsh and can dry out the seals that keep your watch waterproof. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, and alcohol, as these can damage the watch.
Step 3: Cleaning the watch band
Cleaning your watch band is important because it has many grooves and crevices where dirt can easily accumulate, leading to an unclean and unhygienic appearance.
Thoroughly spray the watch band with a special cleaning spray for watches. Let the spray sit for a moment, then rinse the band well. Spray the band again generously and use a special brush with water to remove all the dirt. Rinse the band well afterward to ensure all the dirt is gone.
If you have a leather watch band, use a special soft microfiber cloth or leather cleaner. Avoid using chemicals, soap, or other cleaners. Another option is to simply purchase a new band, as contaminants like sweat, skin oils, lotion, and dust can easily penetrate the leather and are very difficult to remove.
Step 4: Cleaning the watch case
Always start by checking whether your watch is waterproof. You can check this online, in the provided manuals, or by asking the jeweler where you bought the watch. Always ensure the crown is securely tightened! Cleaning your watch case is done at your own risk.
Once you’ve ensured everything is safe and waterproof, you can begin by rinsing the watch under lukewarm water from the tap or in a small bowl. This will remove surface dirt. Next, spray a special watch cleaning spray generously on the watch and band. This will loosen the dirt, allowing you to clean between all the grooves and crevices with a special brush. Rinse the watch thoroughly afterward and repeat this step if necessary until all the dirt is removed.
Step 5: Dry with a special microfiber cloth (nano cloth)
Once your watch is completely clean and shiny, you can gently dry it with a special microfiber cloth, also known as a nano cloth. These are high-quality cloths, specifically designed to absorb much more moisture and dirt than, for example, cotton. Using a good cloth is essential to prevent scratches! Don’t be tempted to use a tea towel or hand towel, as these fabrics can cause scratches, especially on precious metals.
If you have a special watch cleaning kit, it often includes a care spray to restore shine and provide protection against moisture and dirt. Spray this on as the final step, and you’ll have a fresh and sparkling watch on your wrist again.
